We want you to be successful in creating a sustainable flock, so when you order American Bresse chicks from The Recreational Homestead you will receive chicks from our three breeding groups. Each chick will come wearing a colored leg band so you can easily identify what breeding group they are out of. We will do our very best to provide you with an equal amount of chicks from each group. *PLEASE NOTE: For the health & safety of the chicks, these leg bans MUST be take off and replaced with your own form of identification within the first 24 hours after you receive your chicks. We pride ourselves on the care and preparation we provide our chicks. Our chicks will ship out to you at no more than 24 hours old. We look up the weather in which the chicks will be traveling, and customize each box to accommodate the temperatures that they may encounter.
Why is “Bresse best”? A perfect dual purpose chicken, the American Bresse is a beautiful white bird with a bright red comb and bold steel blue legs. They are hardy, easy to raise, and have a great temperament. They lay a delicious, light brown egg approximately 4-5 times a week (about 250 eggs a year). Hens can start laying as early as 4 and a half months. American Bresse chickens are the fastest growing dual purposes breed taking approximately 14 weeks to reach a mature weight of 6-7 pounds for males and 4-5 pounds for females. But it’s worth the wait as they are well known for their amazing meat quality! Unlike any other chicken, Bresse have the ability to have marbled meat similar to beef. This makes for the juiciest, most tender meat!
